I have only seen a few butterflies so far.  I saw my first Monarch last week, lots of Northern Crescents and a Red-spotted Purple.

There has been a Common Goldeneye hanging around the Thames at Gibbons Park.

Medway Valley - June 18

In the dragonfly department, I've seen Common Whitetails, a Widow Skimmer and Ebony Jewelwings.   Hoping with the heat next week, I will see more.

Last Week of February 2025

Last week did some birding Monday, February 24, 2025 at Greenway Park.  That's all the birding I did for the week as I was sick with a terrible cold.  Here are some of the ducks I saw.

Greenway Park - December 24, 2024

I saw a nice variety of ducks today at the river.  The weather was milder, 0c and overcast.  The snow on the ground was wet and slushy.

The Great Blue Herons were high in the trees today.  There were 9 of them and one flyover.

December 28, 2024 - At Greenway again looking at the Great Blue Herons. Today there were 10.  I went to the Coves but nothing much there.  We actually had some sun today.

Last Week of January 2024

It has been dreary the last week of January but actually the whole month of January.  The temperature was around the 0c mark and also overcast, light snow or drizzle.  So the ground has been wet and muddy with water pools to walk around on the paths.   

At Greenway, there were not many ducks.  The Thames River is still very high.  A few Goldeneyes and Common Mergansers were seen.  The Canada Geese and Mallards are along the edge of the river plus Canada Geese were on the grassy areas in the park.

January 29, 2024 - The Coves...Parts of the ponds were open but mostly still ice covered.  Many Canada Geese and Mallards were around.  A couple of Hooded Mergansers, Common Mergansers and one Great Blue Heron.  There was a pair of Red-tailed Hawks in a tree together and an immature Bald Eagle flew by.  Other birds I saw were Black-capped Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, White-breasted Nuthatch, Downy Woodpeckers, Northern Cardinals, American Tree Sparrows and American Goldfinches.

It has been quiet at the Hyde Park ponds.  The pond is still frozen.  Here is a Great Blue Heron at the edge and was walking a bit on the ice.

It was a nice surprise to see a Merlin land in a tree nearby.

Mid-February Findings

I've been close to home at the Coves and Greenway Park lately.  I am now hearing Red-winged Blackbirds which is nice.

We've had some cold days and snowy days with freezing rain in the mix.  

The ponds are still frozen but the Thames River is mostly open now.  I saw this Great Blue Heron trying to keep warm one morning.

Saturday morning at Greenway Park..it was snowing.  There were some nice groups of Common Goldeneyes, Common Mergansers, Hooded Mergansers and a continuing Redhead.

Along the river bank, I saw a nice flock of American Robins.
