Birding - Week of September 14-17, 2020

I didn't find any new or rare birds this past week.  But I found a lovely Green Heron.  What a beautiful bird!

Other birds I saw were Great Blue Heron, Turkey Vultures, Blue Jays, Northern Cardinals, Song Sparrows, American Goldfinches, Red-eyed Vireo, White-breasted Nuthatch, Double-crested Cormorant, Mallards, Downy Woodpecker, Black-capped Chickadees and Mourning Doves.

I found an Eastern Phoebe.  I wondered what it was doing beside the building.  I don't know what that is (a box attached to the building) but the Phoebe was laying on the top...looks like warming itself from the warmth of the sun.

 September 12, 2020 - The Coves

Yesterday was a very nice day, 18c and sunny.  The main event of the day was watching the Broad-winged Hawks high in the sky migrating.  They were in 'kettles' circling around high and some lower.  They were flying west. I got some photos of some flying overhead.  It was hard to tell how many as some were really high.....I counted around 60 but there were a lot more.  I also saw a Red-tailed Hawk and some Turkey Vultures.  Today, I saw a Cooper's Hawk.

I also saw a Northern Parula, Eastern Phoebe, Carolina Wrens, American Goldfinches, Downy Woodpeckers, lots of Blue Jays, a flyover Double-crested Cormorant, Song Sparrows, Northern Flickers and some Wood Ducks.

This new blog format is going to take some time to get use to!

I was going to take a photo of the Great Blue Heron but my camera found a Green Heron. I didn't get a chance to focus in time and it was gone.

There were a few butterflies today.  I also saw some Monarchs.

September 3, 2020 - Greenway Park

It was nice to see a Greater Yellowlegs in the Thames River along with some Mallards.

The osprey was in a nearby tree looking around.

September 5, 2020 - The Coves

It was an overcast day today with a light drizzle.  A lot of my photos were dark and shadows.  I couldn't get the settings right.

The Great Blue Heron below was up in a tree above me.  

I think I got some American Redstarts here.  They kept bouncing around...going behind branches and leaves.  Photo not great. 

I'm not sure what the bird is below.  I'm thinking Blue-gray Gnatcatcher.  My photos were just terrible today.  There was a nice flurry of small birds...some Back-capped Chickadees, American Goldfinches, and Downy Woodpeckers mixed in.
