Birding End of October 2022

I went to a few places at the end of the week into the weekend.  Still seeing migrating birds lingering around....Yellow-rumped Warblers, Red-winged Blackbirds, and Field Sparrows.  A lot of American Robins this week and Cedar Waxwings.

Pied-billed Grebe

There were 2 Hermit Thrushes in the bush and birds eating weed seeds -  Black-capped Chickadees, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Golden-crowned Kinglets, American Goldfinches, White-throated Sparrows, House Finches, and Song Sparrows.  It's so nice to see American Tree Sparrows, Purple Finches, and Dark-eyed Juncos.

Four crows were making a fuss together.

Cute little birds....Brown Creepers, Red-breasted Nuthatches and White-breasted Nuthatches were seen this week also.

Red-tailed Hawk

Still a few Turkey Vultures around.  I always miss them when they are gone over the winter.

Black-crowned Night-Heron

I've seen the Black-crowned Night-Heron for several years during late summers.  This year I never found it.  Finally, October 24 & 25, I was able to see the juvenile on a branch over the water partly hidden.  The adults are mostly gray-black and white with long white head plumes.  The juvenile is mostly white and brown.  They winter in Mexico and Central America.  I'm thinking the parents have already left.  This fellow should be leaving shortly.

I've seen some hawks around the area.  The Cooper's Hawk and the Red-tailed Hawk.  A few Turkey Vultures are still migrating.

Mid-October Birding

October 17, 2022 - Coves

We had a few cold, rainy days this past week. I went to the Coves for a morning walk before it started to rain.  Halfway through my walk it started to rain. I didn't get a lot of photos as I was trying to cover my bins and camera from getting wet.

This Great Blue Heron didn't look too thrilled about the rain.

Double-crested Cormorants

Wood Ducks

Lots of White-throated Sparrows at Kilally Meadows the other day.  Hard to find them in the fallen leaves.

Hairy Woodpecker

The Northern Cardinals were on the ground with the sparrows and having a bath in the puddle.

Yesterday was a beautiful day.  Lots of Canada Geese in the pond and flying in small numbers.  There were some Mallards, a Great Blue Heron, Ring-billed Gulls, Turkey Vultures, Northern Flicker, American Crows, lots of Robins, Blue Jays, Red-winged Blackbirds, Common Grackles, Cedar Waxwings, Song Sparrows, White-throated Sparrows, American Goldfinches, Dark-eyed Juncos, House Finches, a Field Sparrow, a Catbird and lots of Starlings

Fall - Beautiful Time of Year

Bird migration has been in full force since September.  Weather wise, the Fall season has been really nice and very pleasant and comfortable for birding.   A lot of hawks have gone through with Turkey Vultures going through in large numbers right now.

Pied-billed Grebe

As I was birding, flocks of blackbirds came flying in.  Mostly Red-winged Blackbirds with Grackles mixed in.  It's very exciting seeing flocks of birds moving around.

There were flocks of House Finches flying around from tree to tree with some American Goldfinches.

Midland Painted Turtles

The fields are very pretty right now with the purples, yellows, oranges, and reds of trees, shrubs and flowers.
