Mid-January Findings

Coves - Jan 21, 2023 

I went for a walk at the Coves.  At the one pond..a group of Hooded Mergansers were swimming around together.  Lots of Canada Geese and Mallards.  There were also two Great Blue Herons.

These two Red-tailed Hawks were in the trees not far from each other.  The one, pulling at twigs and small branches and flew over the trees southward.  The second one did the same thing ....nest building?

Greenway Park  - Jan 23, 2023

We had snow yesterday for the first time this January...got about 2 in.  It was pretty with the snow on the trees.

Birding Area Parks

I went for a walk at Greenway Park, January 10, 2023 to see what was at the river.  Lots of Canada Geese and Mallards.  Also saw some Hooded Mergansers, Common Mergansers, and American Black Ducks.  The water is still high at the Thames with no ice or snow.  The ducks are spread out more because of that.

There were 4 crows making a fuss over in the tree area.  I noticed a Cooper's Hawk high up in a tree.  The crows were constantly harassing the hawk.

There was a little open water at the swamp area that the Mallards are together swimming around at the Coves, January 11.  

I saw two Carolina Wrens and there were very active.  

In the swamp area there were Song Sparrows, American Tree Sparrows, Winter Wren, Carolina Wrens, Dark-eyed Juncos, American Goldfinches, House Finches, Downy Woodpeckers, and White-breasted Nuthatch.  I watched these birds for awhile.

First Week of January 2023

Greenway Park  

With the rain we've had lately and the melting snow, the Thames River is very high with water over the banks.  I saw Canada Geese, Mallards, Common Mergansers, and a Bufflehead.

Coves

At the Coves, the one pond was still frozen and the other had some open water.  The Hooded Mergansers, Belted Kingfishers, Great Blue Herons were enjoying the water.
