Late August Birding

August 24-29, 2020

I walked in Hyde Park a few times this past week.  I was hoping to find some shorebirds and warblers.  The Barn Swallows were flying around over a large piece of grass.  I also saw Cabbage Whites, Northern Crescents, Eastern Tailed-Blues and Common Ringlets.

Small flocks of Cedar Waxwings were around.

I was surprised to see this female Purple Finch...FOY.

Saturday was overcast with rain off and on.  This is the second time this year that I've seen an Olive-sided Flycatcher.

One day, I was at the Coves and saw 6 Great Blue Herons.  The photos below are the 6 herons.

Exploring around London

August 19, 2020 - Killaly Meadows ESA, London, Ontario

I went to Killaly Meadows this morning.  I have not been there for awhile. Lots of young robins around.  I have not seen any Fall warblers yet.  There were lots of American Goldfinches, Cedar Waxwings, Northern Cardinals and Mallards.  I watched a family of House Wrens.  The adults feeding their young.  I heard Red-eyed Vireos, Eastern Wood Pewees and Carolina Wrens.

Not many birds today...there were just seven Mallards in the pond.  I saw a Double-crested Cormorant flyover, Ring-bill Gull, Osprey and Blue Jays.  I was also looking for butterflies.  Lots of Cabbage Whites, Viceroys, a Monarch, Northern Crescents, and some Yellow Sulphurs.

A few Turkey Vultures were circling around.

I  hope next week I can find some warblers!

Nothing much new to report this past week.  I'm seeing signs of Fall now.

I saw a couple of Great Egrets which was nice.

Spotted Sandpiper

I really enjoyed watching a pair of Ospreys since April when they were building their nest.  Now it's fun watching the juvenile.

I have not seen too many butterflies.  Since all the weeds and grasses were cut back in the Spring, I have not seen the variety of butterflies and dragonflies I usually see.  This is where I've seen the Clearwing the past 2 years.  I don't think I will be seeing one this year.

Last Week's Findings

August 3, 2020 - The Coves

I found this baby Snapping Turtle on the path.  I was afraid it would get stepped on so I moved it off the path.  It was about 2 inches long.

August 4, 2020  Hyde Park

Here is the adult Osprey at a nearby tree watching the baby.

The baby was down at the pond looking around.  Then it took off and flew around for awhile.

I walked around for awhile and as I walked along the pond, the baby came from behind me and plunged into the water.  The Osprey was right in the water and took him a few seconds to take flight again but he got up a bit and went back in the water.

Finally, it got out and perched.  Didn't catch anything.

I first heard the Common Yellowthroat and found it in the tree right above me.

I always love seeing Indigo Buntings!
