Fanshawe/Gibbons Findings

Fanshawe Conservation Area, London, Ontario

It was a sunny morning but very cold...feeling like -20c.  I decided to go to Fanshawe Conservation Area to try to find the Evening Grosbeak.  This is my third attempt and it was no where to be found.  I stayed at the Tamarack Trail entrance and waited for awhile.  There were lots of Dark-eyed Juncos..the most abundant species.

The White-crowned Sparrow is still here...

There were 7 Blue Jays around flying in and out.....

A few Cardinals.....

I got my FOY Song Sparrow....

The Fox Sparrow is still around.  It stayed in the tangle to the right of the trail.  

I also saw a Red-tailed Hawk, Common Crows, and a Red-bellied Woodpecker.

Gibbons Park, London

I stopped by Gibbons on the way home to check on the Great Horned Owl.  They are nesting in the same tree as last year.

Findings at Fanshawe CA

Fanshawe Conservation Area, London, Ontario

I thought I would go to the Fanshawe Conservation Area today to try to find the Evening Grosbeak again.  No luck.

There were a nice variety of birds feeding around the start of the Tamarack Trail area.  Lots of Dark-eyed Juncos around about 35 or even more.

It was nice to see the rare Fox Sparrow.

There were Blue Jays, a Red-bellied Woodpecker, Back-capped Chickadees, Northern Cardinals, White-throated Sparrows and heard a Common Crow.  At the dam, I saw the continuing 4 Greater Scaups and Canada Geese.

I saw the White-crowned Sparrow briefly.

Before going home, I dropped by the Killarney pond to see what was there.  Lots of Canada Geese, Mallards, an American Black Duck and the Canvasbacks.  I counted 7.  Most of the Canvasbacks were sleeping.

Calm before the Storm

This morning was sunny and warm, 16 degrees.  Late morning the clouds started moving in as we are getting rain this afternoon/tonight.  The winds are going to pick up too.  So I'm glad I got most of my birding in earlier this morning.  I saw Carolina Wren, Mallards, Red-winged Blackbirds, Robins, White-throated Sparrows, American Goldfinch, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Cardinal, Cedar Waxwing, Black-capped Chickadees, Downy Woodpecker and Turkey Vulture.  

A big Northern Map Turtle although I don't see any red on it.
